Hip or Knee Replacement? Why Guided Rehab Is the Key to Getting Back on Your Feet with Confidence

Hip or Knee Replacement Rehab
Hip & knee replacement rehabilitation · Booragoon

If you’ve recently had a hip or knee replacement, you’re not alone — joint replacements are common surgeries for Australians, particularly later in life. And while the surgery itself is a major milestone, much of your recovery happens in the weeks and months afterward.

At Adaptive, our physiotherapy in Booragoon has helped many people just like you get back to walking, gardening, travelling, and enjoying time with family. The difference isn’t just time. It’s structured, guided rehabilitation with a physio who understands your body and your goals.

Let’s talk about how physiotherapy can support your recovery and help you move forward with confidence.

The Truth: Surgery Is Only Step One

Many people are surprised to learn that getting a joint replaced isn’t a complete fix on its own.

Sure, the old, painful joint has been replaced — but what about the months (or even years) of weakness, stiffness, altered movement habits, or loss of balance that came before surgery? Your muscles and movement capacity need time to adapt. Without appropriate rehab, some people find themselves still dealing with discomfort, weakness or hesitation.

A guided physio program, using the same progressive principles you’ll find in our sports rehabilitation program but tailored specifically for joint replacement recovery, helps you work towards moving well again — not just healing from surgery.

The key message

The operation is a major step. Rebuilding strength, movement and confidence is what helps you return to the life you want.

Why Post-Surgery Rehab Needs More Than a Handout

Many patients are discharged from hospital with a printout of basic home exercises. These are important in the early days — but they’re only part of the picture.

As you recover, you may also benefit from:

A plan that fits you

Exercises tailored to your operation, starting point and what you want to get back to.

Guidance and supervision

Help with technique, confidence and understanding any restrictions from your surgical team.

Progressive strength

Training that builds appropriately as your movement and tolerance improve.

Real-life movement

Walking, stairs, balance and daily tasks — not just exercises on a sheet.

This is exactly the type of care we focus on at Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage.

Our Physios Don’t Just Prescribe — They Coach

One of the biggest misconceptions about physio is that it’s just lying on a table while someone works on your muscles, followed by a few stretches at home.

That’s not how we work.

At Adaptive, our physios are also strength and rehab coaches. They use movement-based principles alongside the skills of our exercise physiology team to help you rebuild physical capacity. That means:

  • We don’t just tell you what to do — we coach you through it.
  • We use active, guided movement and, where appropriate, hands-on care for associated muscle discomfort or stiffness. Remedial massage is also available as its own service, when appropriate for your needs.
  • We assess your gait, balance, strength, and functional movement.
  • We build individualised programs and support you as you progress.

If you’ve ever been frustrated with passive treatments or felt left on your own after surgery, this approach may feel like a breath of fresh air.

Balance, Strength, and Movement You Can Trust Again

After joint replacement, many people worry about:

  • Losing their balance
  • Falling
  • Damaging the new joint
  • Feeling unstable on stairs or uneven ground
  • Not being able to kneel, squat, or get up and down from a chair

Physiotherapy can help you regain confidence in what your body can do.

Depending on your surgery, recovery stage and medical advice, your program may include:

Balance

Standing control, weight shifts and, when suitable, single-leg balance work.

Strength

Progressive exercises for your hips, legs and the movements you use every day.

Walking

Building walking tolerance and making your gait feel more comfortable and confident.

Daily movement

Standing, sitting, stairs and carrying groceries — with guidance that fits your current capacity.

We meet you where you’re at and move forward together — at a pace that’s appropriately challenging and safe for you.

Your Recovery, Your Goals

Everyone’s reason for wanting a joint replacement is different.

For some, it’s returning to travel or golf. For others, it’s playing with grandchildren, enjoying long walks with a partner, or simply managing daily life with less discomfort.

Our physiotherapists take the time to understand your lifestyle, motivations, and concerns. From there, we build a program that:

  • Aligns with your goals
  • Works within your schedule
  • Fits your current fitness level and post-operative precautions
  • Adjusts as you improve

What to Expect When You Start

Not sure what the first session looks like? Here’s what happens in your initial physiotherapy assessment:

01

Thorough review

We talk through your medical history, surgery, current symptoms and any instructions from your surgeon.

02

Movement assessment

We look at how you’re moving now and which daily activities are difficult.

03

Strength and balance

We assess strength, balance and other relevant movement abilities, when appropriate for your stage of recovery.

04

Goal-setting

We find out what matters to you — perhaps walking further, getting back to golf or managing the stairs.

05

First steps of your plan

We explain a sensible starting point and how your rehabilitation can progress.

You’ll leave with a clearer idea of where you’re at, what you’re working towards and what your next steps might be — without being overwhelmed.

Important after surgery: Follow your surgeon’s instructions about weight-bearing and movement precautions. Contact your surgical team or seek urgent care for symptoms such as worsening redness or drainage around the wound, fever, marked calf swelling or pain, chest pain or shortness of breath. Chest pain or sudden shortness of breath require emergency assessment.

Don’t Settle for “Just Getting By” — You Deserve to Thrive

Too many people feel they simply have to manage or accept life after surgery.

But you may still have room to rebuild. To get stronger. To move with more ease, confidence, and enjoyment.

With the right physiotherapy support, life after a hip or knee replacement can still be active, independent, and full of possibilities.
