Hip or Knee Replacement Rehab

Hip & knee replacement rehabilitation · Booragoon

If you’ve had a hip or knee replacement and still don’t feel like yourself again — you’re not alone.

Many people leave hospital rehab with a basic sheet of exercises, a few check-ins, and a vague sense of “just keep going.”

But what happens when that’s not enough?

When stairs still feel like a challenge… when kneeling, walking long distances, or even getting off the couch feels unstable… when you’re told “everything looks fine,” but you still don’t feel fine?

At Adaptive, our physiotherapy in Booragoon is built on the belief that you deserve more — more guidance, more personalised care, and more support to get back to the life you want.

What Happens After Standard Rehab Ends?

Hip and knee replacements are major surgeries — and hospital-based rehab is often focused on helping you recover safely in the early stages. Priorities commonly include:

  • Making sure you can walk safely with crutches or a stick
  • Reducing the risk of blood clots and other complications
  • Helping you return home and manage daily activities more independently

The important difference

Functional independence isn’t the same as full recovery.

Many people leave early rehabilitation before they’ve regained everything that matters to them:

Strength

Capacity through the hips, legs and surrounding muscles.

Confidence

Feeling more comfortable with stairs, bends and everyday tasks.

Balance

Trusting your body on uneven ground or when changing direction.

The activities you love

Gardening, longer walks, dancing or playing with the grandkids.

That’s where some people get stuck — not because they’re doing anything wrong, but because they may need continued guidance beyond those important early milestones.

You Didn’t Fail. You May Just Need More Support.

If you feel like you should be “further along by now,” please hear this: you haven’t failed.

Early post-op exercises serve a purpose. But what helps you safely get home from hospital may not be the full plan you need for rebuilding lost strength, improving balance, and getting back to the activities that make life meaningful.

You deserve a plan that goes beyond the basics. Where appropriate, we can use the progressive strength and movement principles found in our sports rehabilitation program to guide the next stage of recovery — adapted specifically to your surgery, goals and current capacity.

What True Recovery Looks Like

Real rehab doesn’t necessarily end when you can walk around the house. It’s about working towards the things that matter to you:

  • Building strength in your glutes, hips, quads and core
  • Improving stability and control so everyday movement feels more manageable
  • Regaining balance so you feel steadier on your feet
  • Re-training movements like stairs, getting off the floor, turning or carrying groceries
  • Building confidence in what your new joint and body can do

This is where guided physiotherapy can make a meaningful difference.

Physio at Adaptive: More Than Just a Treatment Table

At Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage in Booragoon, we do things differently.

Our physiotherapists aren’t limited to hands-on treatment and a sheet of exercises. They’re also movement and rehabilitation coaches who:

  • Work with you in our rehabilitation and strength-training space when appropriate
  • Create personalised programs tailored to your surgery, goals and stage of life
  • Guide you through progressive exercise with a clinical understanding of post-operative rehabilitation, alongside exercise physiology expertise when useful
  • Reassess and adjust your plan as you rebuild strength and confidence

And if some associated muscle discomfort needs hands-on care, options such as remedial massage may be considered when appropriate to your stage of recovery. It’s not a substitute for progressive rehabilitation or for your surgeon’s advice.

Whether your surgery was three months ago or twelve, there may still be worthwhile goals to work towards.

What Does the Process Look Like?

Every journey is a little different, but here’s how we approach it:

01

Thorough Assessment

We assess your movement, balance, strength, ongoing pain or restrictions, and relevant surgical precautions. We also talk about what you want back — walking further, kneeling in the garden, lifting grandchildren, playing bowls or climbing stairs more confidently.

02

Personalised, Progress-Driven Program

No cookie-cutter plan. Your rehabilitation is tailored to your needs, goals and current capacity, including lower-body strength, functional balance and coordination, and gradual progression without unnecessary flare-ups.

03

Hands-On Support and Coaching

We coach you through movement, provide feedback and reassurance, and adjust exercises in real time. Hands-on treatment may be included where appropriate, but coaching and building your own capacity remain central.

04

Real-Life Integration

Our focus is always on you living your life: stairs, uneven ground, getting up from the floor, longer walks, gardening, and returning to gentle sport or recreation where appropriate.

Real Results from Real People

The results that matter aren’t just changes on a pain scale. They’re about being able to do more of life — walking further, using stairs with confidence and returning to activities that feel important.

Why Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage in Booragoon Is Different

We serve Booragoon, Myaree, Melville and surrounding communities — and we’ve built our approach around the kind of care we’d want for our own parents and grandparents.

  • A calm, welcoming space
  • One-on-one care from physiotherapists who take the time to listen
  • Rehabilitation that goes beyond a checklist — focused on outcomes that matter to you
  • A team that believes in guiding, not just prescribing
  • Physiotherapy expertise combined with strength-based coaching

It’s Not Too Late. And You’re Not Alone.

If you’ve had a hip or knee replacement and still feel limited — you don’t necessarily have to “just live with it.” You don’t have to settle for feeling stuck.

There may be more you can work towards. And we’d love to help you explore what’s possible.

A note on post-operative safety: Your rehabilitation should follow any precautions given by your surgeon. New or worsening calf swelling, sudden breathlessness, fever, increasing redness or drainage around the wound, or a sudden major change in pain or function needs prompt medical assessment; sudden breathlessness or chest pain warrants emergency care.
