Dry Needling - Frequently Asked Questions
Offered as part of Remedial Massage at Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage, Booragoon
Dry needling is a technique used by our remedial massage therapists to release muscle tension, reduce pain, and improve function. It involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into tight or overactive muscle bands (trigger points) to help them relax and reset.
While both use similar needles, dry needling is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles, not Traditional Chinese Medicine. The goal is to target specific muscular trigger points and relieve pain or dysfunction, rather than balance energy flow (Qi) like acupuncture.
Most people feel a small prick as the needle goes in, followed by a twitch or ache in the muscle — which is a normal response. Some tenderness afterward is common, but it usually subsides within a day or two. Our Booragoon therapists will always explain the process and check in with you during treatment.
Dry needling is often used for conditions like neck and shoulder pain, lower back tightness, headaches, sciatica, and sports injuries. At Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage, we commonly use it to release stubborn knots that don’t respond fully to hands-on massage alone.
Yes — when performed by trained professionals. All our remedial massage therapists offering dry needling are fully qualified, insured, and follow strict hygiene protocols. We take the time to explain the procedure and ensure you feel comfortable throughout.
Your therapist will always discuss it with you first. If they believe dry needling would benefit your condition, they’ll explain why and get your consent before including it in your treatment. You can also request it during your remedial massage session if it’s something you’re interested in trying.
If dry needling is performed as part of your remedial massage session by a qualified therapist, it may be included under your remedial massage rebate — depending on your health fund. We process rebates on the spot at our Booragoon clinic via HICAPS.
You may feel some muscle soreness, similar to what you’d experience after a workout. We recommend gentle movement, hydration, and avoiding heavy training for 24 hours. If you have any concerns, our team is always available to guide you post-treatment.
