Cupping - Frequently Asked Questions
Offered as part of Remedial Massage at Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage, Booragoon
Cupping is a soft tissue technique where suction cups are placed on the skin to lift and decompress the underlying muscles and fascia. It helps increase blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and promote healing. At Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage in Booragoon, cupping is often used during remedial massage to enhance treatment outcomes.
The suction created by the cups gently pulls the skin and muscle tissue upwards. This helps to improve circulation, release tight muscle bands, and clear out stagnant fluids and waste products — making it an effective tool for recovery and relaxation.
Cupping can help relieve muscle tightness, reduce pain and inflammation, improve mobility, and speed up recovery from physical activity. It’s commonly used for back and shoulder pain, sports recovery, and tension-related headaches.
Most people describe the sensation as a deep stretch or pulling — not painful, but certainly noticeable. There may be some mild discomfort if cups are placed over very tight or sensitive areas, but our therapists will always adjust suction levels based on your comfort.
Yes, temporary circular marks are common — they can range from light pink to dark red, depending on the level of tension or stagnation in the area. These marks are not bruises and typically fade within a few days to a week. We’ll let you know what to expect and how to care for your skin afterward.
Absolutely — when done by trained professionals. Our team at Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage is qualified and experienced in cupping therapy. We follow proper hygiene and safety protocols to ensure a safe and effective experience.
If your therapist believes cupping would enhance your treatment, they’ll discuss it with you during your remedial massage session and get your consent before proceeding. You can also request cupping when you book or speak with your therapist before your session.
Cupping is generally covered if it’s performed as part of a remedial massage session by one of our qualified therapists. If you’re eligible, we can process your health fund rebate on the spot at our Booragoon clinic using HICAPS.
