If you’re over 50 and living with osteoarthritis, you’re not alone. It’s incredibly common to feel hesitant about movement, especially if you’ve been told to “rest” your joints or you’re worried that exercise might make things worse.
But here’s something important: when chosen and progressed appropriately, exercise can help strengthen the muscles around your joints and improve how you move. It doesn’t mean you’re wearing your joints out.
At Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage in Booragoon, we help people just like you move better, feel stronger, and take back control of their bodies. This article explains how, and why physiotherapy may be a useful step forward for managing osteoarthritis.
“But Won’t Exercise Make My Joints Worse?”
This is one of the most common concerns we hear from people starting physio for osteoarthritis.
It’s understandable. If your joints are already sore or stiff, the last thing you want is to make things worse by pushing too hard. Many people have been told to simply “take it easy,” avoid stairs, or stop certain activities altogether.
But avoiding movement altogether can actually backfire.
The truth is, joints benefit from movement. The key is finding the right starting point and adjusting the amount, type and intensity of exercise to suit you. That’s where a clinical physiotherapy assessment can help.
The goal is not to push through everything or stop doing everything.
It’s to find movement you can manage, then gradually build strength, capacity and confidence.
Why Osteoarthritis Needs Movement — Not Just Rest
Osteoarthritis is often thought of as “wear and tear,” but that explanation is overly simplistic.
Yes, osteoarthritis involves changes in cartilage and other joint tissues. But movement is important for keeping the surrounding muscles strong, maintaining mobility and improving overall function. Resting too much can contribute to:
Muscle weakness
Less activity can make everyday movements feel harder.
Increased stiffness
Avoidance can reduce comfortable movement options.
Reduced capacity
Stairs, walking and getting out of chairs may become more demanding.
Lower confidence
Worry about discomfort can lead to doing less and less.
This can create a cycle: the less you move, the harder it becomes to move. Gentle, targeted exercise rehabilitation can help interrupt that cycle.
What Is Gentle Exercise Rehab — and How Is It Different?
“Exercise rehab” doesn’t mean bootcamp. It doesn’t mean you have to run, jump, or lift heavy weights on day one.
At our Booragoon physio clinic, exercise rehabilitation for osteoarthritis is:
- Adapted to your symptoms and needs — often starting with low-impact options
- Tailored to your ability, not a generic plan
- Focused on building strength, mobility, balance and function
- Progressed with guidance so you can work towards the activities that matter to you
We guide you through exercises at a manageable starting level. You won’t be expected to ignore significant or worsening pain. Some temporary discomfort during or after activity may be acceptable, but we use your symptoms and recovery to decide whether to adjust the plan.
How Exercise Rehab Can Help Osteoarthritis
Gentle rehab can make a meaningful difference. With appropriate exercise and physiotherapy support, people may experience:
Less joint pain and stiffness
Gradually improving comfort and tolerance for activity.
Better mobility and balance
Working towards steadier, more comfortable movement.
Stronger muscles
Building capacity to manage walking, stairs, lifting and daily tasks.
More confidence
Understanding what you can do and how to progress it.
Even small changes can matter. Climbing stairs may feel easier. Standing up from a chair may feel smoother. Walks may become more enjoyable.
And perhaps most importantly, you can start to feel more in control of your body again.
“But I’m Not Fit… Or I’m Too Old to Start”
We get it. Many people in their 50s, 60s, or 70s feel like it’s “too late” to make a difference. Others are afraid they won’t be able to keep up.
Here’s what we want you to know: it’s not too late to start working on your strength and movement.
At Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage, we regularly work with people over 50, including those who haven’t exercised in years. That’s okay. We meet you where you are — and guide you from there.
Our clinic environment is calm, friendly and not intimidating. You won’t be pressured to keep up with someone else. You’ll find one-on-one support, a personalised plan and a team that listens to you.
Common Questions About Starting Physio for Osteoarthritis
“Will it hurt?”
We aim to choose exercises at a level you can manage. Some mild, temporary discomfort can occur when you start or progress exercise, but significant pain or symptoms that remain aggravated are a reason to adjust the plan. Pain is never the goal — progress is.
“What if I’ve already had a joint replacement?”
We also help people rebuild strength and movement after joint replacement surgery. Your plan will account for your surgical history and any advice or restrictions from your treating team. You can read more in our article on hip or knee replacement recovery.
“Do I need a referral?”
For a standard private physiotherapy appointment, you generally don’t need a GP referral. Some funding or compensation pathways have additional requirements, so check with us if you’re unsure.
