Why Our Program Is Perfect for People Over 50 Living with Fibromyalgia

We understand that fibromyalgia isn’t just about pain — it’s about how your whole body feels, how fatigue impacts your day, and how movement can feel overwhelming at times. That’s why our approach is different — supportive, individualised, and paced just for you.

A Safe, Supportive Environment

Our clinic is quiet, clean, and welcoming — no mirrors, no loud music, no pressure. You’ll work with professionals who understand how fibromyalgia affects your body and mind, in a space that’s focused on comfort and safety.

Qualified, Experienced Staff

Our physiotherapists are experienced in working with chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia. We listen carefully, validate your experience, and gently guide you through movement strategies and exercises that support — not stress — your body.

Individualised, Gentle Exercise Plans

No one-size-fits-all here. Your program is created around your energy levels, symptoms, and lifestyle. We focus on graded movement, pacing, and nervous system regulation — all designed to improve your function without triggering flare-ups.

Support for Everyday Movement

Whether it’s walking, getting out of bed with less stiffness, or simply moving through the day with less fatigue, our goal is to help you feel better in your body — so you can do more of the things you love, with more ease.

A Friendly, Low-Pressure Atmosphere

No mirrors. No pressure to “keep up.” Just a warm, supportive team who will guide and encourage you — every step of the way.

You Set the Pace

We meet you where you're at and progress gradually, with achievable goals and a focus on steady improvement — not perfection.

This isn’t about “pushing through.” It’s about support, self-awareness, and moving in a way that feels good — so you can reclaim your strength, mobility, and confidence.

Balance & Mobility Physiotherapy - FAQs

At Adaptive Physiotherapy & Massage, Booragoon

Who is Fibromyalgia Physiotherapy for?

This program is designed for adults living with fibromyalgia or chronic widespread pain. If you’re dealing with ongoing fatigue, muscle tenderness, stiffness, or pain that doesn’t seem to go away, our physiotherapy program can help you move more comfortably, build strength gently, and improve your quality of life.

Can physiotherapy really help with fibromyalgia?

Yes. While there’s no cure for fibromyalgia, physiotherapy is one of the most effective ways to manage symptoms. Our approach focuses on reducing pain, improving mobility, and building tolerance to movement through gentle, individualised care. Over time, this can help regulate the nervous system, improve energy levels, and restore confidence in your body.

I was told to see an exercise physiologist. Can a physiotherapist help instead?

Absolutely. Physiotherapists are often the best starting point for fibromyalgia — especially if you’re in pain, feel sensitive to movement, or have flare-ups that affect your daily life. We’ll guide you through a safe and gradual movement program, and if appropriate, we can transition you to an exercise physiologist for ongoing management later.

What’s the difference between a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist?

Physiotherapists assess and treat pain, movement problems, and physical limitations. They often work with more complex or sensitive conditions like fibromyalgia, especially in the early stages.
Exercise physiologists focus on long-term exercise planning, fitness, and chronic disease management. If you’re just beginning your journey with fibromyalgia, a physiotherapist is the right place to start.

What happens during my first appointment?

We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, history, and how fibromyalgia is affecting your life. Then, we’ll gently assess your movement, posture, and any areas of pain or stiffness. From there, we’ll create a plan that works with your body — not against it — to help you feel more in control and less overwhelmed by your symptoms.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your goals, how you’re feeling, and how your body responds. Some people feel benefits within a few sessions, while others prefer ongoing support to manage symptoms, build resilience, and maintain consistency. We’ll discuss a realistic plan together after your assessment.

Will I need a referral from my doctor?

No referral is needed to book privately. However, if your GP has given you a care plan (CDM/EPC), you may be eligible for Medicare rebates. We’re also happy to coordinate care with your doctor, pain specialist, or other healthcare providers.

Is this covered by private health insurance?

Yes, most private health funds offer rebates for physiotherapy. Bring your health fund card and we can process your claim on the spot.

What if I’m nervous about starting?

That’s completely normal — many people with fibromyalgia feel unsure or even fearful about movement. Our sessions are designed to be calm, supportive, and tailored to your comfort. We’ll never push you. Instead, we work with your energy, your symptoms, and your pace to help you build confidence and ease — one step at a time.

Can physiotherapy help with fatigue?

Yes — although physiotherapy won’t “cure” fatigue, it can help you manage it better. Through gentle movement, pacing strategies, and nervous system regulation, many people experience improved energy levels over time. Our goal is to help you find the right balance between activity and rest, so you can do more without feeling wiped out afterward.

What if I have a flare-up before my appointment?

That’s okay — we completely understand. If you’re having a flare-up, we can adapt the session to how you’re feeling on the day. Some days you might move more, others may focus on calming strategies, breathing, or lighter mobility work. You’re always in control, and we’ll work with you to ensure your session feels supportive — not overwhelming.
